Our Story
Eastern Cape Frontier Tours was founded by Rob Speirs, one of the foremost experts on the Frontier Wars. For decades, Rob has been guiding visitors through the historic battlefields and significant sites of this pivotal period in South African history.
Rob's deep knowledge of the Eastern Cape landscape comes from years working in the forestry business in the Keiskammahoek area. He recognized that many crucial historical sites were remote, under-visited, and at risk of being forgotten.
Now, through GPS-triggered audio tours, Rob's expertise and passion for Frontier Wars history is accessible to everyone. Visitors can explore at their own pace while receiving expert historical commentary exactly when and where they need it—even in areas with no cell coverage.

Historical Context
The Eastern Cape Frontier Wars (1779-1879) were nine conflicts between the Xhosa people and European colonists. These wars fundamentally shaped modern South Africa's borders, cultures, and relationships.
Understanding these events helps us comprehend the complex history of land, identity, and resistance that continues to influence South Africa today.

Rob Speirs is one of the foremost experts on the Eastern Cape Frontier Wars, with decades of experience guiding visitors through the historic battlefields and significant sites of this pivotal period in South African history.
His intimate knowledge of the landscape comes from years working in the forestry business in the Keiskammahoek area. As one writer noted, "there's seemingly not a fold, crevice, peak, pass, river or hill that he doesn't know."
Rob's tours cover the historic triangle from Makhanda (Grahamstown) to King William's Town to Balfour in the Katberg mountains, bringing to life the stories of Xhosa chiefs, British soldiers, and frontier settlers who shaped the Eastern Cape.
